For the sake of brevity
It's just "The Heavy Rotation" now.
Sander's New Years Eve blast was an awesome time! We have a new Facebook page with some music from the show. Thanks to all who came out.
Matt Strand Group - It's hard to remain anonymous when you name a group after yourself, but I figured I'm going to be playing music around GF indefinitely and could use the buildup. This is a jazz quartet featuring Danny Moffit (guitar), John Nelson (drums), Mark Lentz (bass), and myself (piano/vocals). We are rooted in jazz and R&B. www.facebook.com/MSGJazz
The Heavy Rotation - The Funk returns to Grand Forks in this hard-hitting horn band. One minute, you'll be blown away by our horns, the next, you'll be grooving with our tight rhythm section. Still Fighting It - 2005-2011 An acoustic rock band playing a few of our own songs along with top-40 hits from the 60s through today - everything from Dave Matthews to the Beatles, Sublime to Johnny Cash, and of course Billy Joel and Ben Folds. Jarrod Schell (guitar, lead vocals) and I (keys and vocals) started this band in 2005 and along with Steve Carriere (bass) and Austin Winger (drums), we can be seen regularly at Sanders, Suite 49, and the Blue Moose. www.myspace.com/sfi05
Fatlip/Groove Union - From 2001-2003. A soul band with 5 horns and full rhythm section. I played organ and co-founded the group. We played all the usual joints, but Sanders graciously opened their normal musical repertoire to include us.
Drambuee - I joined on keys in 1999; the group split in early 2001. We could be seen all over town, especially at frat parties, UND events, The Westward Ho, Sensations, and the Blue Moose.
Project 24 - this was originally an offshoot of NJP, but Jared Johnson on sax and Jean-Luc Davis on bass really took this jazz quartet (sometimes trio) to new heights. We played from 2002 to 2006 - at Sanders mostly; Blue Moose, and Suite 49 occasionally.
Northland Jazz Project ("NJP") - This is a group I co-established back in 2001 to provide the area with a different perspective on modern jazz. Consequently, we end up a little more "soulful" than your average jazz group. I played piano, co-founder Steve Carriere was on bass, and there was a rotating membership on drums, guitar, and/or horns. (2001-2007)
229 Groove Collective - A group that's hard to categorize, I guess you'd say it's a blend of jazz, rock, and soul music, with one thing in common: groove. We also tend to jam things up and improvise a lot. I sing and play keys. Other members are Chris Tanzey (trumpet), Steve Carriere (bass), John Behling (guitar), and Zach Spicer (drums). (2007-2008)
